Board our comfortable shuttle in the port of Bari for an hour-long drive through the Apulian countryside to Alberobello. The town was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996 for its characteristic dry-stone (i.e. unmortar), cone-roofed houses known as ‘trulli’. Many trulli are adorned with decorative pinnacles and all have their roofs painted with curious symbols, probably for good luck.
